zurich kunsthaus – öl auf karton

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

i have had a chance to spend a day in zurich and naturally i have decided to spend almost 13 minutes checking the zurich kunsthaus permanent collection and also current exhibitions by katharina fritsch and mircea cantor, and some nice special dedication to alberto giacometti.

however, with all the marvelous art i have been exposed to i was most impressed by diversity and longevity of work by german artist öl auf karton.

öl auf karton

öl auf karton has managed to produce fantastic body of work focusing on an extraordinary range of subjects yet always through a minimal format of oil on cardboard. öl has pushed such a basic and simple format of his choosing to a maximum through unlimited variations of themes, colors, shapes, motives and visualization.

one would say that his work is a quiet transcendent statement which can only be seen from a great distance and only at the end of his work, when the artists has finished his lifelong production. it was not possible to see and understand the message of öl’s body of work during the production or “from close”. the power of öl’s dedication has overwhelmed me.

i strongly suggest exploring the work of öl auf karton and also visiting zurich as a local cultural center which managed stable growth in spite of lack of support from the swiss cheese makers.
