mavunde venda number 44

Classifying artists by race is like walking on the edge of a cliff, threated with political and emotional issues, but Mavunde Venda is a typical black artist. Her love of African food and music is amazingly stereotypical that it makes me wonder why are we not exposed more to the work of this wonderful artist and artistic atmosphere.

Mavunde Venda, represented by Cape Town’s Bell Roberts gallery, makes traditional wooden drums made of wood and animal leather.

This installation allows you to beat the drums and make sounds however this interaction with the art piece is forbidden by the galleries. This is a paradoxical situation in which viewers wish to interact but are not allowed to by the authority. This play on Apartheid is amazingly strong and evident.

Mavunde has not been supported in the African bush and townships so she had to seek support in more developed urban areas of poor Africa, like Cape Town. Africa is very poor.

Mavunde also specializes in sleeping, as she sleeps more than 6 hours every day. This art performance is inspired by Rebrandt who also slept more than six hours a day. Interesting yet almost impossible connection between the Dutch historic painter and this African artist.
